This past semester, the fall of 2020, the studio I was in gave us the opportunity to prepare an entry for a competition called The Uniting Line. The proposal was for development of the Collar City Bridge underpass, for which my group developed Troy Story Park.
As well as using our traditional software, we also got the opportunity to use a LIDAR scan produced by Scan2Plan. It was their largest project that they'd done, and in my opinion, it was worth the money that Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute invested in it.
I was very enthusiastic about working with the models that were produced, and when we saw it, we were all amazed with the way it had turned out! Having been to the site a few weeks prior, I was delighted to see the level of detail that was represented in the Revit point cloud that was produced, especially when it came to the bridge structure. My classmates were able to adapt it into a file compatible with Rhino, but I was much more interested in getting the render quality out of the Revit model to get more experience with the software.
Needless to say, I was happy to be able to use this technology to further my project. The photorealism in these images is nothing short of spectacular, and I was able to use them in coordination with renderings and photoshop work for my group's proposal for Troy Story Park, which you can see here.
While I'm currently trying to develop more skill with Revit design software to become proficient, last semester was certainly a good jumping-off point to start from. I've been learning a lot about how to use design software, especially in collaboration with each other. Eventually, using the point cloud in Revit felt like using any other object, just a lot larger, and with a lot more data embedded in it.
Oddly enough, none of this would have been possible without the pandemic. Because fewer people are able to go places in person, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's school of architecture is trying to find more ways that we can use technology to keep us connected, both to each other and to the real world. I am beyond grateful for their investment, and what I contributed to it in order to get these results. I hope to be able to have an opportunity to do something like this again!
